The Body Shop Superfood Face Masks review: Himalayan Charcoal; British Rose; Chinese Ginseng & Rice

A few weeks back I received three Superfood face masks from The Body Shop. The masks were freshly launched last month. I was given an opportunity to try three masks from the Superfood range: Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask, British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask, and Chinese Ginseng & Rice Clarifying Polishing Mask. If you are interested to find out more about the masks, keep reading.

Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask

This is a slightly tingling clay mask which is infused with with bamboo charcoal, green tea leaves, and organic tea tree oil. All those components make it perfect for combination/oily skin like mine. It promises to draw out impurities and refine appearance of pores for healthy looking skin.

I used this, (and all other soon to be mentioned masks), every two days. I applied the charcoal mask mainly to my jaw area, on my nose, and between my brows. On certain days I also applied it on my forehead. It just depended where I felt I needed the charcoal and tea tree power the most at that moment.

The scent was fresh and clearing. I could sense green tea vibe and tea tree.

On my skin the mask felt nice. The consistency was soft, smooth, and creamy enough for an easy application. It had little charcoal pieces in it, which gave it an interesting look and feel.

After the masks my skin was soft and smooth. My pores appeared smaller and skin felt pure. In three weeks I saw how my complexion was slowly improving. The mask also absorbed excess oil and gave a healthy glow. On my zitastrophie area it helped to dry uninvited guests. The mask, alongside with the Tea Tree Anti-Imperfection Daily Solution (review here), cleared my chin and jaw area from acne.

  • 100% vegan
  • Fresh scent
  • Pores appear refined
  • Absorbs excess oil
  • Purifies the skin
  • Gives nice healthy glow
  • Formulated without parabens, paraffin, silicone or mineral oil
  • Packed with bamboo charcoal from the Himalayan Foothills, green tea leaves from Japan and organic Community Trade tea tree oil from Kenya

Chinese Ginseng & Rice Clarifying Polishing Mask

This is a creamy exfoliating mask which is formulated with ginseng extract, rice extract and sesame seed oil. It promises to reveal brighter-looking, even and supple feeling skin. The mask is for skin that needs a treatment to reduce dullness and unevenness.

I used this mask  every two days. I applied it mostly on my forehead. I didn’t have many problems with that area in the past few weeks. Mostly I was fighting with older acne scars on my forehead. The mask easily helped to even the skin.

The scent of the mask was fresh but subtle. I can’t point out any outstanding scents. I would say the scent was smooth and quite neutral.  It should be suitable even if you are sensitive with smells.

On my skin the mask felt soft, it didn’t tingle or dry out in ten minutes. It almost felt like it wasn’t there because of the creamy consistency. When I rubbed the mask between my two fingers, I felt teeny tiny scrubbing particles.

After the masks my skin was soft and smooth. Within three weeks I saw how my complexion was slowly improving.

  • 100% vegetarian
  • Fresh, but subtle scent
  • Soft on the skin
  • Unevens discolourations
  • Has small scrubbing particles in
  • Illuminates, evens and revitalises skin
  • Formulated without parabens, paraffin, silicone or mineral oil
  • Blended with rice & ginseng extracts from China and organic Community Trade sesame seed oil from Nicaragua

British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask

This is a refreshing gel face mask which is infused with real rose petals, rose essence, rosehip oil and organic Community Trade aloe vera. It promises to moisturise the skin and give it a smooth, youthful, dewy appearance.

I used this mask every two days. I applied it on my cheeks and down to the jaw area where I had already applied the charcoal mask.

The scent of the mask was sweeter than the others. It smelled like a rose garden on a sunny afternoon. I loved the rosy scent!

On the skin it was bit cooling because of its gel type consistency. It felt soft and was easy to apply. I loved that I could see rose petals in the mask.

After the mask my skin was soft and smooth. I believe that since the mask was moisturising and gel like, my skin looked fresher than before. It also helped to reduce the redness I occasionally get around my cheek area. Since the skin is more sensitive on cheeks than other parts of face, it is more irritation prone to stronger ointments. This mask moisturised and gave a nice glow without causing any problems.

  • 100% vegan
  • Moisturises, soothes and tones skin
  • Gives healthy dewy glow
  • Reduces redness
  • Formulated without parabens, paraffin, silicone or mineral oil
  • Infused with real rose petals, rose essence from Britain, rosehip oil from Chile and organic Community Trade aloe vera from Mexico

Packaging

The masks are packaged in a glass jars with a screw cap. The glass is dark brown, which helps them stay fresh longer. It makes sure that the light won’t affect the quality of the mask as easy as it would with lighter tone glass.

Application

I applied the masks with my fingers. There is an also option to use a brush if you should have one. All masks are creamy or gel like enough for an easy application.

I used Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask on my jaw area and on my nose; Chinese Ginseng & Rice Clarifying Polishing Mask on my forehead; British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask on my cheek area. I mean, who said that you have to use only one mask at the time, right?

    • How do you like the Ginseng & Rice mask? I love it’s soft consistency 😊 I have heard that the honey mask is great for dry/normal skin. I couldn’t use it tho, I have oily/combination skin.

  1. How exciting – new masks from TBS!
And I love how you multi-masked with them! That’s all the rage right now hehe. I can’t decide which one I’d want to try first… maybe the British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask, it would be perfect for the upcoming winter months!

    • I don’t know what is your skin type but I think that British Rose is suitable for everyone. It is soothing and moisturising but it didn’t cause me any breakouts. I usually get them with very moisturising masks. Of course if you have dry skin, I’d take a look at their honey mask from the same range. That is super moisturising 😊

  3. i have tried the himalayan charcoal purifying glow mask.and i feel like the tingling sensation is too much for me as i apply it to all over my face.is it okay or is it not suitable to my skin as im 17 years old?kindly hope for your reply

    • Your age doesn’t matter here. If your skin is irritated or you have acne, then tingling sensation can be harsh on your skin. My suggestion is just to listen to your body. If it is too much, don’t hold it on your face so long or use it on sensitive areas. I hope you found my reply helpful.
